Tribes living in the Pacific Northwest used to build totems to celebrate potlatches to show the families pride, wealth and power. The totem was then left to decay where it was erected. Now we are constantly on the go, moving our homes, jobs, etc. We still build our totems, they just need to be portable now. It also shows the importance of our personal histories and family in what we have become and what we value.
